friends only

Okay, everyone. Here's the deal.
For a long time -- from April 2001 until 2006, acutally -- I had a mostly-public LiveJournal. It was something I prided myself on -- I liked the fact that people from my life could read my blog and know what's going on with me.
Even though I don't have anything to hide... call me protective, if you will, but I want to have some measure of privacy. I am a Working Adult With A Real Job, and my entire undergraduate life is in this blog -- which is amazing and also a bit scary (as you can imagine). I don't want just anyone to read that stuff anymore. :) I'm also not terribly active in the LJ world anymore, so there aren't a lot of entries that happen here these days.
I will add you back if you request it, but please leave me a comment to let me know.
Thinking about friending me? Here's a little description.
My name is Lauren, though depending on where you come from in the Internet world, you might know me as Ry. I'm a college student, currently an undergraduate, who is applying to graduate school in Linguistics. I play the trombone and am majoring in Music and Linguistics, and minoring in Classics and Sexuality Studies. I work in a library and also as a clerical assistant in my Linguistics department. In June 2006, I graduated Magna Cum Laude, with Honors and Distinction, from a large midwestern university. Now I am a graduate student in Sociolinguistics at another large university, albeit in another state. I graduated in April 2013 and now I'm Dr.
iamleaper. Now I have a real job working in academic publishing and research. Woohoo!
My graduate work is mostly centered in digital game theory. I wrote my Master's Thesis and Ph.D. dissertation on multimodal language use in World of Warcraft and how community norms and identity pattern a player's uses of language.
In what little spare time I have, I read for pleasure, write a little and, yes, play video games. I love Greek mythology and culture, and have a passing knowledge of Ancient Greek (but only with my books handy). I read Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels when I have the chance -- I am a huge fan of Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Jacqueline Carey, Brandon Sanderson, and Scott Lynch. I'm a Browncoat -- otherwise known as a Firefly and Serenity fan. I watch an eclectic mix of television shows consisting of Castle, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Once Upon a Time. I'm also a trombonist; I play with a local band and do gigs whenever I get the chance. I write a lot about my trombone... I think it's my first and truest love.
I'm a gamer at heart and tend to fall into fandoms for games that I play. Right now, it's Dragon Age that has my attention, although I have passed through the fandoms of Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy X/X-2, and World of Warcraft. I write fanfiction (find me on AO3 or FFN).
I'mnot afraid to not fit into your boxes bisexual, I drink coffee and go to Panera more than I probably should, and I love studying the way people use language in everyday life.
Anything else? Just ask.
Please e-mail me at the.ryry at yahoo dot com if you have any questions or just want to talk.
