Okay, everyone. Here's the deal.

For a long time -- from April 2001 until 2006, acutally -- I had a mostly-public LiveJournal. It was something I prided myself on -- I liked the fact that people from my life could read my blog and know what's going on with me.

Even though I don't have anything to hide... call me protective, if you will, but I want to have some measure of privacy. I am a Working Adult With A Real Job, and my entire undergraduate life is in this blog -- which is amazing and also a bit scary (as you can imagine). I don't want just anyone to read that stuff anymore. :) I'm also not terribly active in the LJ world anymore, so there aren't a lot of entries that happen here these days.

I will add you back if you request it, but please leave me a comment to let me know.

Thinking about friending me? Here's a little description.

My name is Lauren, though depending on where you come from in the Internet world, you might know me as Ry. I'm a college student, currently an undergraduate, who is applying to graduate school in Linguistics. I play the trombone and am majoring in Music and Linguistics, and minoring in Classics and Sexuality Studies. I work in a library and also as a clerical assistant in my Linguistics department. In June 2006, I graduated Magna Cum Laude, with Honors and Distinction, from a large midwestern university. Now I am a graduate student in Sociolinguistics at another large university, albeit in another state. I graduated in April 2013 and now I'm Dr. [livejournal.com profile] iamleaper. Now I have a real job working in academic publishing and research. Woohoo!

My graduate work is mostly centered in digital game theory. I wrote my Master's Thesis and Ph.D. dissertation on multimodal language use in World of Warcraft and how community norms and identity pattern a player's uses of language.

In what little spare time I have, I read for pleasure, write a little and, yes, play video games. I love Greek mythology and culture, and have a passing knowledge of Ancient Greek (but only with my books handy). I read Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels when I have the chance -- I am a huge fan of Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Jacqueline Carey, Brandon Sanderson, and Scott Lynch. I'm a Browncoat -- otherwise known as a Firefly and Serenity fan. I watch an eclectic mix of television shows consisting of Castle, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Once Upon a Time. I'm also a trombonist; I play with a local band and do gigs whenever I get the chance. I write a lot about my trombone... I think it's my first and truest love.

I'm a gamer at heart and tend to fall into fandoms for games that I play. Right now, it's Dragon Age that has my attention, although I have passed through the fandoms of Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy X/X-2, and World of Warcraft. I write fanfiction (find me on AO3 or FFN).

I'm not afraid to not fit into your boxes bisexual, I drink coffee and go to Panera more than I probably should, and I love studying the way people use language in everyday life.

Anything else? Just ask.

Please e-mail me at the.ryry at yahoo dot com if you have any questions or just want to talk.

It must have taken forever to lock the previous entries. It's terrible that you have to do this.

I'm staying open. I freely give my opinion in the world and on the Internet, so it's not like what I put on here is truly private and personal. I guess I am just so weird and quirky that what I say on here just is not going to change perceptions of me.

That's one of the reasons I've made my journal mostly friends-only as well (among others). So I understand! It's a shame, but I guess it has to be done. I'd like to stay please. :)

I assume those of us who are already on your FL will remain so? I am sorry you have to do this since one of the hallmarks of your personality has been your openness and absolute courage. (I am not accusing you of a lack of bravery now.) It is a shame that those qualities are a handicap in this paranoid world we have been given. That said, I think you are being entirely sensible and practical. We shall enjoy continuing to read what you have to say.

It's really sad that it's come to this, but I know exactly how you feel as I locked down my journal a few months ago.

Us, of course. While I regret the need for caution, I have to agree that caution can be good. Hopefully everything will work out. :)

hey. just thought you might want to know that in your little description, it says 'i'm getting majors in...' and well, knowing how well you write, i'm not certain that's the phrase you wanted. ^^

CANNOT WAIT FOR TONIGHT OMG.

Hi LC,

I understand your viewpoint.

I do *not* find your new idea paranoid at all. For example, I wondered if people from your potential graduate school might read your blog...

I've always wondered why young ppl (and others) would put their private thoughts and actions online. I certainly would not feel safe in doing so.

I've enjoyed reading your blog a lot, but I won't be making a LJ account. I hope to see you whenever you are home! You can fill me in on your news then.

:)

In 20 years from now, our society could be even more of a neo*azi state than it is now. You may hold a position of influence in that future time and maybe something that you've blogged back here in '05 would threaten you then.

I agree with you wholeheartedly even though it means I can no longer read your journal.

It's not being paranoid at all. It's C.Y.A [Cover Your Ass]. No harm in that. It would be a shame for you to get into trouble, even if it is for such a lame reason as keeping a journal.
