Okay, everyone. Here's the deal.

For a long time -- from April 2001 until 2006, acutally -- I had a mostly-public LiveJournal. It was something I prided myself on -- I liked the fact that people from my life could read my blog and know what's going on with me.

Even though I don't have anything to hide... call me protective, if you will, but I want to have some measure of privacy. I am a Working Adult With A Real Job, and my entire undergraduate life is in this blog -- which is amazing and also a bit scary (as you can imagine). I don't want just anyone to read that stuff anymore. :) I'm also not terribly active in the LJ world anymore, so there aren't a lot of entries that happen here these days.

I will add you back if you request it, but please leave me a comment to let me know.

Thinking about friending me? Here's a little description.

My name is Lauren, though depending on where you come from in the Internet world, you might know me as Ry. I'm a college student, currently an undergraduate, who is applying to graduate school in Linguistics. I play the trombone and am majoring in Music and Linguistics, and minoring in Classics and Sexuality Studies. I work in a library and also as a clerical assistant in my Linguistics department. In June 2006, I graduated Magna Cum Laude, with Honors and Distinction, from a large midwestern university. Now I am a graduate student in Sociolinguistics at another large university, albeit in another state. I graduated in April 2013 and now I'm Dr. [livejournal.com profile] iamleaper. Now I have a real job working in academic publishing and research. Woohoo!

My graduate work is mostly centered in digital game theory. I wrote my Master's Thesis and Ph.D. dissertation on multimodal language use in World of Warcraft and how community norms and identity pattern a player's uses of language.

In what little spare time I have, I read for pleasure, write a little and, yes, play video games. I love Greek mythology and culture, and have a passing knowledge of Ancient Greek (but only with my books handy). I read Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels when I have the chance -- I am a huge fan of Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Jacqueline Carey, Brandon Sanderson, and Scott Lynch. I'm a Browncoat -- otherwise known as a Firefly and Serenity fan. I watch an eclectic mix of television shows consisting of Castle, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Once Upon a Time. I'm also a trombonist; I play with a local band and do gigs whenever I get the chance. I write a lot about my trombone... I think it's my first and truest love.

I'm a gamer at heart and tend to fall into fandoms for games that I play. Right now, it's Dragon Age that has my attention, although I have passed through the fandoms of Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy X/X-2, and World of Warcraft. I write fanfiction (find me on AO3 or FFN).

I'm not afraid to not fit into your boxes bisexual, I drink coffee and go to Panera more than I probably should, and I love studying the way people use language in everyday life.

Anything else? Just ask.

Please e-mail me at the.ryry at yahoo dot com if you have any questions or just want to talk.

Hi Lauren, may I friend you?

--- and just in case you were wondering, it's me, akari. I recently got bullied into getting an LJ account by some fellow fanauthors and am still trying to get the hang of it.

The good part of this account is that I get to add people I know to my 'f-list' so I can find them again and occasionally talk to them.

So, again, can I add you?

Greetings Lauren!
I from Russia. Your help is urgently necessary to me: I finish college and that it(him) to finish to me it would be necessary to write the abstract on a theme " a trombone, as the the soloist tool in a jazz. The analysis of creativity of Johnson ". But a problem that I do not know what to write. You can help(assist) me. Probably, at you, your friends or in university's libraries were kept old works. Or you know on-line base with abstracts where there can be my theme... I Shall be grateful for any help because we in ru-net do not have any information.

Hi there Ry. You probably don't really know me, but I'm from the Gippalai (did I spell it write this time?) community and I'm always interested in reading about other people's lives. Especially if they live in America. So it would be awesome if I could read yours. Kthnx.

Hello!

I found you through jurhael, and you seem interesting, so I would like to add you, if this is permitted. We have some common interests also; I was a classics major and have an interest in linguistics, though I never studied it formally and am liable to foul up when I try to talk about it.

I'm not good at making a case for why you should add me, and I don't think much of my own LJ-output; my journal will largely open a portal into the wonderful world of what I ate for breakfast and who I want dead on any given day and, at present, how unfair it is that I'm not independently wealthy and can't go to New Zealand to learn Maori. (Subject to change in a few weeks.)

Anyway: hello. It's nice to meet you.

Hiya! I was going through some ooolldd icons I have and checking the LJs of their makers, and you seem really cool. We seem to have some similar interests and would love to be added. :) My LJ posting is kinda sporadic and usually fannish in nature, but I'm trying to pull out of that a bit. Feel free to look around mine if you'd like! :)

I followed you from a comment on the verbing of nouns (etc.) on Fanthropology. I think we may have some overlapping research interests, and I'd be curious to see what you're up to. I don't post all that often, so I doubt I'll disrupt any established reading patterns.

Tracked you here from a linguistics-y comment in fanthropology on the spread of netspeak. And yeah, linguistics-y is totally an adverb now.

Would love to see some more of your writing; also, it'd be great to get into yr base and kill some dudes. If you're into that sort of thing XD.

I actually found you through you mass Laguna icons post that I adore and use those icons mostly for the RPing I do. I read your description and you seem pretty cool to me too! I love reading Fantasy/Sci-Fi novels myself and it's actually kind of hard to find others who love the same (it's surprising, since I go to an Art school!).

Anyway, before I end up rambling, may I add you?
